While not ideal, storing my projects on Dropbox has enabled me to get at most of my Curio projects on the go via the PDF previews of the idea spaces that Curio makes automatically. I'm rather partial to iAnnotate PDF on the iPad, and it's got a pretty good file viewer that works with Dropbox. Since curio files are packages, you can dig into the folder structure and find pretty nice PDFs of your idea spaces within the folders. Thus, I can see things.

To add things back into Curio...well, that's just a matter of figuring out what sort of content you're adding, and then finding a good app to use to do so. George has excellent suggestions above.

OmniOutliner and OmniFocus are two of my big ones. I use Evernote quite a bit as well.
I, too, would love to see Curio on the iPad, but more because I want to be able to traverse my notebooks in real-time and review them without having to haul out the laptop. To do that, I have to convert to a .pdf ahead of time, which can be cumbersome to navigate and requires porting to the device. If we can get Curio to export hyperlinks (so I can create a table of contents or something like that) when it creates a .pdf then this option is very acceptable as it retains my look-and-feel and is still navigable. I can deal with the regular migrations.

For taking notes, I use Evernote due to its interface with Curio. Not the best solution, but very acceptable all things considered. I prefer the iPad for note taking when I am in meetings where a table isn't available or where I need to facilitate and don't want to look like I'm more focused on my laptop than my client. Evernote works like a champ for this, and since I'm generally only doing text (with the occasional photo of a whiteboard or other drawing), the free account is more than sufficient. The only drawback is I have to recreate the checkbox items as they don't translate over to Curio and I want them to show up on my dashboard.

I'm anxious to see what others have tried.
While I couldn't color the bookmark icon itself in the inspector bar I was able to add checkmarks to items in the bookmarks menu if the current idea space is already bookmarked. Hopefully that will help.

	Posted: Tue May 21, 2013 6:58 pm (GMT 0)

There are over a dozen general note-taking apps for the iPad ranging from free to $10 or so. Some have a handful of Curio's features but none have all of Curio's features -- that'd be a pretty darn fat iPad app. However, if you separate out Curio's big features into smaller features you can find several fantastic app-sized choices.

Notability is quite good at simple notes. Evernote is fantastic for clippings and obviously integrates with Curio very well. Tons of people like Penultimate if you want a general pen-writing app. Now that it's integrated with Evernote it even supports character recognition.

There are tons and tons of general text/note editors. Mostly plain text but a good number are supporting rich text now since iOS 6 finally added rich text classes. PlainText, iA Writer, Simplenote, Drafts, etc, are all excellent.

There are lots of iPad mind mappers out there. My favorite by far is iThoughtsHD. It supports MMAP export/import which means it can be used to exchange maps with Curio.

There are several good outliners, the best probably being OmniOutliner.

There are several good flowcharting apps, the best probably being OmniGraffle.

Lots of voice recording apps, but you can just use the bundled one or the one in Evernote.

For tables, perhaps stick with Apple's Keynote or Numbers apps. They're excellent.

For task tracking you can stick with Calendar/Reminders or move up to OmniFocus.

For PDF markup GoodReader is very good (pun not intended). But there are lots of choices here as well.

Etc....

Basically it depends on what you want to do. Determine what parts of Curio you use the most and then see if there are apps that can do those things. Also think about the complexity of the "projects" that you create. In Curio on the Mac, idea spaces are essentially unlimited which is really fantastic... on the Mac. But that imposes huge memory, speed, and rendering issues on an iPad app. So, if you simply want to jot down some notes during class then check out a quick text editor or journal app. Buy an app that specializes in exactly what you need so it's fast and efficient.
As a fairly long-time Curio user (started back in 2006) I've been patiently waiting for some kind of solution on the iPad and am mostly giving up that it'll ever happen.

I recognize developing a whole new application is a huge amount of work and I'm not dumping on George at all here, but I really need some way of working with documents ala Curio but on the iPad and waiting for an official solution seems like a long wait.

Has anyone found a comparable solution? I've looked at a few of the note-taking apps and a few (like Notability and Noteshelf) look promising, but I'd love to hear other people's desktop-to-iPad workflow.
It sure would be nice to have a choice to print somewhere between full-sized Idea Spaces that take up 45 pages and shrunk-to-8.5x11" Idea Spaces that are too tiny to read?

How about a tiling feature that allows the user to specify a number of pages high and wide, like Excel and OmniPlan have?

I know you can use Page Setup, but you don't get any sort of preview, so it's hard to control and involves a lot of back-and-forth clicking.
Perhaps you have to add your own OmniOutliner document to Curio's menu? Create a new document in OO then save it to your Desktop with a name like "Dan's OmniOutliner". Then use Curio's Insert > Instant Document > Add File as Instant Document menu item to add a duplicate of that OO document to its internal repository.

Your entry should now show up as an available instant document.
We don't store the arrangement with the style information so that you can use any mind map style with any arranged mind map.

If you find yourself using a certain style and arrangement frequently you create a mind map stencil for that (by right-clicking on the mind map) and simply use that stencil.
It seems that the arrangement is not an attribute saved with the MM style.

I would always want to default to right maps but Curio defaults to radial, so I have to manually change nearly every MM I create, despite having various MM styles for those.

Is there a way around this?
Is there a way to 'enter' (select the root topic) a selected mind map with the keyboard alone?

I often find myself having escaped out to having the mind map figure selected, to either nudge the map around with the arrow keys or because I wanted to change the arrangement, only to find I then have to use the mouse/trackpad to get back to navigating around the topics.

This breaks up the keyboarding flow somewhat.

If it doesn't exist, how about something like Shift-Escape to reverse the normal direction of Escape?

It might have wider applicability throughout Curio.
I tried a quick test: I create a text figure. Bring up the meta inspector. Type in "test" for a new tag (without the quotes) and press Return. Perhaps you weren't pressing Return there?

An alternative technique is you can select the "Local Project Tags" heading then click the Actions button (it looks like a gear) and choose the Add Tag menu item.

For dates, I toggled on the Start Date and it seemed to work. I toggled on Due Date and that seemed to work as well.

Send me an email (support at zengobi) as Support via forums is a bit tricky.

UPDATE: crashes specifically when I go to set the due date. I turn the due date on, but then when I click to set it, it locks up.
Hi, I am a complete newbie, coming from OneNote, and trying to figure out this program. I am struggling with assigning tasks. I think I ::finally:: figured out how to do it, but it's not saving?? I will click on a figure, type in a tag (for example "Convert"), close out, and when I go back in, it's not there, and it is also not showing up in my task list on the right. Please help!! This is pretty much the only roadblock I have to determine if I want to purchase or not. Thanks for any help! Please forgive the newbie questions.
