Thanks for the info.

I will have a play around with the full screen mode as that might be what I am after if I hide the toolbar.

Glad you're loving Curio!

Curio 8's going to be later than Spring. It's a HUGE rewrite of major portions and I won't release it until I'm happy with it.

I'm not sure about the pricing for the new product or upgrades, currently. Currently the new Pro product is $169 new and $69 for upgrades.

An interactive presentation mode is interesting. How is that different than just running in full screen mode? (BTW, Curio 8 will support Lion's true full screen mode.)
Thanks George

I am really loving Curio and so glad I found it, by chance, from an EverNote link page. It's just what I needed.

I have seen snippets about v8.0 in the Spring, If I buy v7.00 (Pro) will this likely to be a big upgrade cost? Want to support you as this is a fantastic product.

Any thoughts on an 'interactive presentation mode' where you could project a screen and create mind maps etc.?

Appreciate the support.

Yes you can install Curio on both your Macs with the same license.
A number of journaling apps do what you want. You might look at Chronories as an example. I'd vote for integration with them, if this were a choice on your list.

Subject: Mind Map to Tiered or Legal Numbered List.
Posted: Sat Feb 04, 2012 5:22 pm (GMT 0)

Wanted to create a number list to help reference nodes and came up with the following.

Changing Curio Mind Map to Legal Numbered outline

MS Word treats the Curio RTF the same as Pages.

Exported the MindMap figure as OPML from Curio yields an XML file that Pages does not think it can open.

Opened the XML file with MindNode then Exported from MindNode as RTF Outline which gives bullets, unlike Curio's Tabs.

Opened the RTF Outline with Pages and the bullets have indent levels. Deleted the first node (avoid a single first level), selected the document, changed the bullets to Tiered numbers and reduced all levels by 1 level (moved to left). Now have what I was after.

Using HexEdit, see that MindNodes RTF Outline contains much more meta data than Curio's RTF file. The MindNode file is 20KB. The Curio file is 8KB

This does not put the numbers on the Curio MindMap but gives a way to refer to the nodes by a number when discussing.
Hi

I am using the trial (60 day) licence on My MacBook Air. Would I also be able to install Curio and use the licence with my iMac?

I am also assuming if this is possible I could sink the Projects in Dropbox?

Mind maps don't currently support numbering, sorry.

While not exactly the same you can prune the branch into its own collection. Right click on a branch and choose Prune To Linked Collection to prune off the branch and turn it into an independent mind map. Then you can right-click on that new mind map and choose Convert Into List.
Welcome to Curio!

To delete a project just use the Finder to drag the project file to the Trash. A Curio project is just a document (with a .curio extension) that you store on your Mac's hard disk anywhere you choose when you perform a File > Save.
I believe I saw this request somewhere, but oddly can't find it now, sorry if it's a duplicate!

While I understand Curio is more developed around the project management concept, I believe as a visual note taking application it's 2nd to none… except for one feature that's in most other top note-taking apps:

A "menu bar" feature for when you don't want to open curio but want to add a quick text note or screen/image capture.

Thanks for considering!
Of course creating an application that 'does it all' is near impossible, but would like to make this request:

A basic journaling function possibly with:
- Automatic Date entry
- Calendar view option
- Text formatting
- Paragraph formatting
Thanks for considering!
Posted: Sat Feb 04, 2012 8:05 am (GMT 0)

Over the past couple of years I've begun to use Curio more and more, and now it's rooted in my daily work as an artist.

6 months ago I began a journal to help facilitate better visual note taking in Curio. I've tried various apps from Evernote, DayOne, SOHO Notes, MacJournal, etc…

While EverNote integration is tight, I believe it would be great to support a few other journal/note apps. In my case DayOne.

Having said that, if Curio adds it's own journaling features my like… hehehe….. would be complete.
Subject: Numbering mind map items
Is it possible to number items in a mind map branch automatically? I would like to be able to select a branch in a mind map and turn it into an ordered list.

By mentioning Fantastical I didn't mean that exact look (i.e. the calendar, etc). I just meant a "box" that appears when you click the menu and disappears when you click elsewhere.

In Curio's case our box would have places for you to enter rich text (including images) plus some popups for various meta data. Basically a "quick snippet" entry area.

So, yes, you would at least be able to paste to that popup. I'm not sure about drag-and-drop as I think those types of menus generally collapse when you click away and they can't appear simply by dragging something to it although that would be wonderful if they could work that way.

I've got some other ideas for that area as well. Stay tuned!
I was thinking more like Fantastical (http://flexibits.com/) but I don't believe you'd be able to drag something to it.

This is certainly a cool idea for the project management side of Curio.

I'm thinking of the data-collection side with a desktop "drag/drop" box. The "background" option for the main Curio window (perhaps with a "shrink to minimum size" option) might do the trick. I would ultimately be happy with just a drag-and-drop "box" that could be invoked to show up on the desktop from the menu-bar pull-down that you are creating. The only purpose of that box (floating above or behind all other windows) would be to allow a user to drag+drop anything that can be "clipped" (files, text snippets, mail, Web page URLs ...) by the standard Mac drag+drop operation. Once dropped, the "box" would send the snippet directly to a Curio "inbox" for later processing. That "inbox" could by default be the Scrapbook, or alternatively a user-definable project (I happen to have one called ScrapBook where I dump idea space information in/out on a routine basis). In the language of Getting Things Done, it is the step of collecting the information that I want to streamline when working with Curio. I want to abandon SOHO notes (though I very much like the concept) and DevonThink and ... all the other such tools that are to "collect" stuff. I do not need to add YAF (yet another finder) such as these that are supposed to be fully designed for "quick collection". But I do want the one tool (Curio) where I am beginning to do a lot more of all of my processing work to be a bit easier at the up-front collection.

george wrote:

Basically with Curio 8 I'm stepping way back and asking how can I simplify the product. The #1 feedback I receive (even beyond the iPad requests) is that Curio is complex. Once you're in it, you love it, but it takes a while to learn how it all works.

Yes. My thought is occasionally less about simplification and more about gathering some GUI "clutter" in to a more intuitive format. Did I say for example that I just discovered mini-mode the other day after nearly a year or so.

Curio is a very great tool, and I look forward to what you are developing in version 8. It sounds like you have a good product in store for us. Thanks!
I'd like to have an option similar to float on top and make it "stay in the back". That way when I click somewhere on curio, it becomes active but the other windows will float above it. Then I could use a key combination -> send it to the back, drop different things, then use another key combination -> bring it to the front.

Interesting. Yes, I've got a Window > Window On Top feature but a Window > Window In Back would be a useful addition.

Quote:

Would this support drag-and-drop? I think that is more what I had in mind. For example, to be able to open a selection of folders in the finder, command click on a set of files, and drag+drop those files on to a Curio dock to have them directly stored as resources, especially in to a specific project.

Hmm... I'm not sure what limitations exist for menu bar extras. I was thinking more like Fantastical (http://flexibits.com/) but I don't believe you'd be able to drag something to it.

Under 10.6.x, the SOHO notes "tab" stays resident directly on the lower right of my right-most screen (below my dock bar, which I happen to keep on the centered right side of my right-most screen). It stays that way in all of my spaces. Clicking on the tab expands the drawer to show "shelf" where you can drop objects (anything that can be put in via drag+drop). I do not know how SOHO Notes works under Lion.

Oh wow! I didn't realize Mini Mode had fans!

If I'm dragging some stuff from Safari I can either (a) alt-tab back to Curio if it's on some other Space and then drop the dragged items, (b) drag to the side of the screen which quickly zips to the Space to the left so I can drop it in Curio.

Alternatively, if I'm doing a bunch of drag-and-dropping, I use one of the nifty Curio hotkeys to do a Window > Left Half and then move the window right next to Safari. (Basically Safari and Curio and side-by-side each filling half the width of my screen and each stretched all the way vertically.) That way it's bigger than Mini Mode (on my 27" iMac) but still very convenient.

The menu extra I was discussing earlier would fit on the menu bar on the far right side. Like next to Spotlight, the time, your Time Machine icon, Twitter, Dropbox, etc. So it would be a little Curio icon. Click it and a drop down window appears where you can paste in some rich text, assign some tags, start/due dates, etc. Basically a super easy to access quick-entry widget. A mini Curio which is running all the time without the big Curio running.

The SOHO Notes thing you describe would be cool but I can see that inevitably interfering with other services such as Dock show/hide or Spaces switching.
Get rid of mini-mode??? Command / is my favorite hotkey! I use it all the time to minimize from full screen to drag in items from web browser, finder, email, wherever. Command / and I am instantly back.

How is that kludgey and how do I replicate that functionality (I hope at least command / does something cool because my fingers hit it without thinking....)?

... I just find it a bit kludgey.

Understandable. As I think about this, the functionality of interest to me is more toward an active "drag-and-drop" way to capture objects in to Curio without having Curio open fully on the desktop.

george wrote:

What I'd prefer is a menu bar icon widget on the far right side of the screen. ...

... or far left or bottom left or .... ??? IOW, user-definable in position????

george wrote:

A little Curio icon with an easy way to quickly add rich notes or other snippets either to the Scrapbook or some sort of Inbox in Curio.

I am wondering ... are we talking about the same thing? I am thinking of a drag/drop "hot-spot" the user can position to dump things in to Curio. Are you proposing a menu bar pull-down that initiates an action on a given object (ie, Send to Library)?

As an example, SOHO Notes put up a desktop "widget" that acts as a drawer. You can open that drawer and drop objects in to various locations in the notes. I like the principle.

I can see such a "drawer" that contains active spaces to drag/drop directly to ...

---> Scrapbook (popup menu selection for which scrapbook)
---> Project (popup menu selection for which project)

george wrote:

As an aside, I find myself using Curio's Window > Left Half / Top Half /Etc commands to nicely scoot my Curio window around.

Since I typically have two screens with my workflow, I never bother moving Curio around this way.

To be honest I plan to get rid of Mini Mode in Curio 8.

It was originally designed back in the day before larger screens, before Mac OS X supported virtual screens, before a true full screen mode, before Expose and Mission Control, etc.

Now I just find it a bit kludgey.

What I'd prefer is a menu bar icon widget on the far right side of the screen. A little Curio icon with an easy way to quickly add rich notes or other snippets either to the Scrapbook or some sort of Inbox in Curio.

As an aside, I find myself using Curio's Window > Left Half / Top Half /Etc commands to nicely scoot my Curio window around.
Subject: Some Questions and Thoughts on Mini-Mode

OK, so I have found mini-mode after all this time

I have the preferences set to "Scale to Fit" when mini-mode is invoked. When I rescale the window back to normal mode, the Idea Space stays at the same small size that it had in mini-mode. I would have expected the Idea Space to scale up automatically to fit to the larger size of the Curio "window" in normal mode. Maybe this is a bug or just an unrecognized feature???

It is really great that mini-mode "remembers" the size and placement of the window to go back to from an other invocation. That helps me to "push it aside" always to a standard place when I want to do other things on my desktop. I almost wish though that the Curio window could be collapsed in size to something akin to an iTunes-sized window -- just a mostly-unobtrusive, floating box. Cool would be when this box would also work as a "quick-input" or "quick-capture" type of box that would take drag-and-drop items and place them on to the current Idea Space in the current project. That might bring Curio in line with tools like SOHO Notes or DevonThink or others that are supposed to act to "capture" ideas created from other apps (via drag-and-drop).
