FAQ: Setting default styles

Wednesday, February 15, 2006

We're going to start a series of Frequently Asked Questions to address some of the topics that come up frequently with our users.

One of our top questions is how to change the default style for text figures.

You can actually set the default style for several core types of figures found in Curio: text, images, PDF documents, movies, music, web links, documents, groups, and lists.

Font information, border and shape settings, stroke and fill color settings, icon size, and more are stored with these styles. Lists will remember the list style and prefix size as well.

To set the default style of a figure type do the following:
  1. Select a figure of the appropriate type in an idea space.
  2. Set its attributes to a format you like using the Inspector.
  3. Choose the "Format > Set as Default Style for Figure" menu item.
That's it! Now that style will be used when you create any new items of that type!

So you can use this technique to change the default font and font size associated with text figures. Simply click on a text figure with the font settings you like and choose the Set As Default Style for Text Figure menu item.

Enjoy!

  • This is OK. I have my default text style set to 12pt Courier New with a solid cream fill. This is what I use most and this works well for me.

What puzzles me is that, now I have this selected as my default, I no longer have plain text or sticky notes available to me. Everything comes out in my default style no matter what I select from the text drop down.

I would like to see this work such that if I click on the text tool on the toolbar I get the default. If I select from the drop down I get either plain text with no fill or sticky note style.

  • I agree completely. We'll fix that ASAP!

    Thank you!

  • Is there a way to set a default style for ideaspaces? I like a 50% grey bg so I can judge color relationships more accurately. As it stands, I set up an idea space the way I want, then duplicate it instead of using the "New" command.

It would be more convenient to be able to set the default style for the idea space.

  • We do have plans to add support for idea space templates. For now, however, your duplicate technique is the best workaround.

  • I would like to be able to save styles of shapes, text, and drawing tools in the library. This way I can just drag a preset shape that I've already created from the library to the idea space and it would already have the attributes I've assigned to it.
